Objectives of the Club
The aim of the club is to promote better model-making. It holds regular meetings
where club members can get together and share their experiences, thus enabling them
to create unique models, every part of which will be true to life.
The philosophy of the Club is to encourage:
- a sense of the history of ships, shipbuilding and mechanical engineering. We are
afraid that this knowledge is fast disappearing , in our computerized, electronic
age, and it is very important that it should be preserved, especially for the young.
- manual dexterity: modellers need to be familiar with the techniques involved in wood-working,
handling plastics, fibreglass and epoxy resins, soldering and welding, reading blueprints,
and painting, as well as an understanding of mechanical, electrical and electronic
principles, and an adequate knowledge of the world of shipping and navigation.
- The choice of model trains and ships can be explained by two factors: first, the
originals were mechanical masterpieces, and second, there is a certain nostalgia
for journeys to distant places that also comes from the sea.
- artistry: the club also stresses the artistic aspect of modelling. We are convinced
that each model becomes an individual work of art, with his own feeling and interpretation
of the subject. No two models give the same impression; each piece of work is the
unique expression of its maker`s skill. Like sculptures, they are three-dimensional
artworks; and as working, moving objects, they are four-dimensional works. As we
see it, an important part of the attraction of model building is precisely this artistic
quality. We do not see patience as the most important virtue of our members; rather,
the will and perseverance to create an individual piece and to carry it through to
realization on their own.
- the social value of model building. A hobby that is meaningful, creative and educational
has considerable value as far as young people are concerned. The KMYCA aims to offer
this opportunity.
The KMYCA has different sections:
Static models (mostly historical)
Radio controlled boats (no internal combustion engines)
Radio controlled steamboats
Radio controlled sailing boats
Radio controlled trucks (scale 1:16 and 1:14,5)
The Model Engineering Section
Meetings are held every second and fourth Friday of the month in the clubhouse, Cafe
't Centrum, Strijdersstraat 35, Edegem (a suburb of Antwerp). You are welcome to
pop in for a chat, watch pieces under construction, see all kinds of demonstrations,
or consult our extensive library.
The diary of events lists visits to events and other clubs, excursions, and exhibitions
we are taking part in.
Our monthly club magazine is distributed amongst our members. This modest but well
filled magazine features news, rebuilds, descriptions of models that our members
are building or have completed, company news, and, of course, the latest on club
activities and the diary of events.
Whatever your interest, be it technical, mechanical, wood-carving or - let's not
forget it - model building, you`ll be made most welcome at the KMYCA. You can be
sure to find members who share your ideas!
The KMYCA is no super-club. It is made up of what each of us contributes, be it ever
so modest. Yet because of its many supplementary activities, KMYCA is considered
to be the most versatile Flemish Model building Association.
